A Word from Judges 6

What are some of the battles that you’ll be facing in the week ahead? Are there projects that seem a little overwhelming, or conditions in the world around you that are producing anxiety? Are you contending with illness, or struggling with relationships that have been a little strained? And whatever battles you might be facing, how would you feel if the Spirit of God spoke to your spirit and said, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior”?

Well, I ask that question, because that’s exactly what happened in today’s word from Judges Chapter 6. The people of Israel were under constant attack by the nations around them. And they had cried out to God, asking for deliverance. And God did deliver them, by sending an angel to an unexpected hero named Gideon. And the angel greeting Gideon by saying, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior!” (6:12)

Now, if you know anything about Gideon, you might know that he was a reluctant hero. He questioned why God hadn’t done something sooner to change the situation. He argued that he wasn’t strong enough or important enough to make a difference. But the Lord told Gideon not to focus on what he lacked, and to focus instead on what the Lord would provide. “Go in the strength you have and save Israel,” the Lord said. “Am I not sending you?” (6:14)

Naturally, part of what gives Gideon’s story a happy ending is that the Lord really did send him! Gideon didn’t just take it upon himself to fight battles that he wasn’t equipped to fight. And we should take that example to heart.

But at the same time, we should remember that God cares about the battles his people face. And time and time again, the Lord has provided strength to fight those battles. And what I hope we’ll keep in mind is that He often chooses and uses people who feel a bit overwhelmed.

So, may the Lord be with you today, mighty warrior! And may His strength lead you to victory. Amen.
