A Word from Psalm 66

When's the last time that you told somebody about the good things that God has done or is doing in your life? When did you last talk about the gifts you've been given or the prayer that He's answered? How long has it been since you shared with someone else your gratitude for the grace He's provided you or your dependence on the way that His Spirit sustains you?

Please understand, of course, that I don't ask those questions to make any of us feel guilty. After all, I know that life can be hectic. And we can easily get distracted by all the worries and amusements of modern life.

And yet, it's precisely for that reason that we need to be reminded at times how important it is that we tell others about the glory of God's goodness. And yes, we do that for their sake, so they can be drawn closer to God. But we also do that for our sake, so that our reliance upon and gratitude for God's goodness can more deeply change our hearts.

And that's why I'm thankful for today's word from Psalm 66, in which one of God's poets takes a little time to testify:

"Come and listen, all you who fear God," the psalmist says,
"and I will tell you what he did for me
For I cried out to him for help,
     praising him as I spoke

If I had not confessed the sin in my heart,
the Lord would not have listened.
But God did listen!
He paid attention to my prayer
Praise God, who did not ignore my prayer
or withdraw his unfailing love from me." (vs. 16-20)

So today, let's tell somebody what God has done or is doing in our lives. And who knows? Maybe they and we will see a bit more clearly the glory and goodness of God. Amen.
